Welcome to Citizens for a Greener Evanston!
Citizens for a Greener Evanston is a group of community members working together with the City to help Evanston, Illinois reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and overall carbon footprint. Please join us!
Why 13% by 2012?
When Evanston signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement in 2006, it joined hundreds of other American cities that have pledged to ‘meet or beat’ the Kyoto Protocol by reducing GHG emissions to 7% below 1990 levels by 2012.
A 2007 inventory conducted by the City showed that, in order to meet this goal, Evanston must reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 13% by 2012. For information on the City of Evanston’s role in reducing GHG emissions, check the Office of Sustainability information on the City of Evanston’s website, http://www.cityofevanston.org/global/green .
What’s a carbon footprint?
Big or small – everyone has one! It’s the measure, expressed in tons/year, of greenhouse gases emitted by all our actions – travel, energy use, products bought, waste produced. Once we know what it is, we can make better choices in all these areas.

Make a contribution to the
Evanston Climate Action Fund
The Climate Action Fund was established as part of the community-wide campaign to reduce Evanston’s GHG emissions. The Fund will invest in GHG emissions-reduction projects in Evanston, with a special emphasis on projects benefiting lower-income households and nonprofit organizations. It’s intended to allow all community members to participate in and benefit from this important initiative, while helping Evanston reach its overall reduction goal of 13% by 2012.
